Lady Eagles bow to Stags

SAN Sebastian College-Excelroof showed too much power and poise as it essayed a 25-22, 25-17, 26-24 victory over Ateneo in the Shakey’s V-League second conference late Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Thai import Jeng Bualee outplay her compatriot Surasawadee Boonyuen, drilling in 20 points and presiding a ferocious attack for the Lady Stags that the Lady Eagles had failed to neutralize.

Guest player Suzanne Roces and Melissa Mirasol backed Bualee with 13 and 11 hits for San Sebastian, which improved to 3-0.

Mirasol teamed up with Dafna Robiños to account for half of the Lady Stags’ 10 blocks in the match that took just 68 minutes to finish.

Ateneo actually put up a tough stand in the third frame, taking a 24-23 lead after a Alyssa Valdez hit to move closer to set point.

But the Lady Eagles floundered, as the Lady Stags scored three straight points, highlighted by a match-winning kill by Bualee to seal the straight set win in the season-ending conference of the league organized by Sports Vision and sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.

The loss dropped Ateneo to 2-1 to joining Adamson and National University in a three-way tie for third place in the event supported by Accel, Mikasa and Excelroof.

Boonyuen was held down 10 points while Alyssa Valdez, the Lady Eagles’ other guest player, added eight points.

Fille Cainglet and Dzi Gervacio chipped in seven hits apiece for Ateneo, which will next face University of Perpetual Help System Dalta on Sunday.

Bea Pascual and Kara Acevido had five points apiece for the Lady Stags. (TJ)
