ASIA Urquico and Sharah So of Ateneo defeated Pau Genido and Ana Maria del Mundo of University of the Philippines, 21-18, 21-17, Saturday at the start of the UAAP beach volleyball tournament yesterday at the UE Caloocan sand court.
Urquico is playing with So for the first time in the league. In the last two years, Urquico paired with Jessica Morado, who has been designated as an alternate.
The Lady Eagles hope to surpass their fifth place finish last year. Ateneo placed second in the event’s first edition in 2007.
Ateneo will next face Adamson tomorrow The Lady Falcons, starring reigning MVP Angela Benting and Pau Soriano beat La Salle’s Charleen Cruz and Amanda Villanueva, 21-9, 22-20. (TJ)

ATENEO did not know what it hit them when Lyceum won the game’s last three sets.
Guest player Mary Jean Balse fired a personal-best 37 points, including five blocks, as the Lady Pirates posted an improbable 22-25, 16-25, 25-11, 28-26, 15-9 win over the Lady Eagles in the Shakey’s V-League second conference quarterfinals late Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Lyceum improved to 5-3 slate to join Ateneo in third place behind league-leaders San Sebastian College-Excelroof (7-2) and Adamson (7-2).
Balse equaled the league’s second all-time individual scoring record by Angela Benting of the Lady Falcons in the 2009 second conference semifinals and Lithawat Kesinee of the Lady Eagles in the 2007 second conference semis.
Ateneo’s Sontaya Keawbundit holds to all-time record of 38 points she set in the battle for third place in the 2010 first conference.
The Lady Eagles, starring guest player Alyssa Valdez, took advantage of the lackadaisical performance of the Lady Pirates to snatch the first two sets.
But in the third frame, Ateneo took Lyceum, as Balse took over from there.
The Lady Pirates then used their vaunted defense against the Lady Eagles to send the game to a decider.
Both teams were battling nip and tuck in the last frame, until Balse and fellow guest player Dahlia Cruz scored critical hits for Lyceum to seal the victory.
Cruz chipped in 18 hits while Joy Cases added 12 points, including two service aces, for the Lady Pirates.
Valdez finished with 17 hits for Ateneo. Dzi Gervacio and Thai import Lek Surasawadee added 14 and 13 hits, respectively. (TJ)

THE 2010 Petron Ladies Beach Volleyball Tournament returns to Lingayen, Pangasinan this weekend.
Sharah So will be back in this leg, which will be held in the beach front of Purok Marcelo Resort, along with Khryzette Onishi for Ateneo.
So and Onishi are hoping to duplicate the feat of Asia Urquico and Jessica Morado, who lifted the Lady Eagles to the first leg championship last February.
The winsome Ateneo pair is expected to face stiff opposition against defending champion Jennifer Manzano and new partner Satchel Senupe of La Salle-Dasmarinas.
Lady Eagles pulled biggest V-League comeback

ATENEO erased a 10 point National University lead in the third set to post the biggest comeback win in Shakey’s V-League history.
The Lady Eagles survived a tough Lady Bulldogs challenge in the last two sets to hammer out a 25-14, 25-22, 26-24 win Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
With the loss, NU dragged to a playoff for the last quarterfinals berth with University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, which fought back from an opening set setback and swept the next three rames, completing a 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-22 victory over College of Saint Benilde.
Guest player Alyssa Valdez had 12 markers while Dzi Gervacio and Fille Cainglet added 10 markers apiece for the Ateneo.
The Lady Bulldogs were seemed headed to extend the game when the Bustillos-based squad moved closer to set point, 24-14. But Valdez and Thai import Surasawadee Boonyuen waxed hot in the big Lady Eagles rally to snatch the win.

ATENEO went thru the wringer before nipping College of Saint Benilde, 19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 17-15, to march in the quarterfinals of the Shakey’s V-League second conference Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
The Lady Eagles notched their second straight win to improve to 4-1 slate.
Bea Pascual shattered the game’s last deadlock at 15-15 with a go-ahead kill for Ateneo to take a 16-15 advantage.
The Lady Eagles clinched the match point after Lady Blazers setter Ren Agero failed to save her dig.
Thai import Boonyuen Surasawadee, who scored a service ace for Ateneo to break a 14-14 standoff. fired 28 points,.
Dzi Gervacio added 12 points, including two blocks, while Pascual chipped in 11 for the Lady Eagles.
Ateneo joins San Sebastian College-Excelroof (5-1), Adamson (4-2), Far Eastern University (4-2) and Lyceum (4-3) in the next round.
The Lady Eagles cap their elimination round campaign against National University on Sunday. The Lady Bulldogs are fighting for the last quarterfinals berth. (TJ)
